Scene Breaks

Insert and style scene break markers to separate scenes within a chapter.

What Are Scene Breaks?

Scene breaks visually separate distinct scenes or time jumps within a chapter. They prevent reader confusion when the narrative shifts location, time, or point of view.

Inserting a Scene Break

Place your cursor between two paragraphs. Go to Insert → Scene Break (or use the keyboard shortcut). The scene break marker appears in the editor.

Scene Break Styles

Sappar offers several built-in styles:

  • Blank space — three blank lines.
  • Ornamental symbol — fleuron, asterism, or custom glyph.
  • Three centered asterisks — commonly called a dinkus.
  • Horizontal rule — thin line.

You can customize the style under Format → Theme Settings → Scene Breaks.

Custom Scene Break Symbols

You can use any Unicode character or short string as your scene break symbol. Enter it in the custom symbol field under theme settings.

Note

Scene break styles are applied globally. All scene breaks in your book will use the same style.
